How is Growing Usage of Connected Cars Driving Global Demand for SLAM Technology?

The advent of autonomous vehicles is a major factor fueling the popularity of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology all over the globe. With the rising incidence of road accidents and the growing concerns being raised all over the world over vehicular and passenger safety, the demand for connected cars is rising at an explosive pace across the globe. This is, in turn, pushing up the requirement for autonomous technologies.

These technologies have the ability to significantly reduce the occurrence of road accidents, on account of their advanced sensing capabilities. In addition to this, autonomous cars consume lesser fuel and emit lesser amounts of CO2 than the conventionally used vehicles. This further boosts their popularity throughout the world. Besides this, the soaring number of augmented reality (AR) applications in various industries is also fueling the demand for SLAM technology around the world.

Currently, AR is being widely used in various applications in verticals ranging from industrial development to healthcare. For example, in the healthcare industry, AR is used for various purposes such as surgery, vein visualization, training, and 3D medical imaging. As the SLAM technology plays a crucial role in AR applications, the large-scale usage of AR is fueling the demand for this technology. The SLAM technology is required for recognizing the surrounding environment.

This makes it possible for the AR devices to recognize 3D scenes and objects, overlay digital interactive augmentations, and track the world instantly. The other major factor propelling the worldwide demand for SLAM technology is the growing utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). These systems are increasingly being used for numerous purposes. For example, UAVs are heavily used in the defense sector for surveillance, location mapping, reconnaissance, and intruder detection.

On the other hand, in the agriculture sector, these machines are used for livestock monitoring and crop spraying. Additionally, UAVs are used extensively for geomagnetic surveys, pedestrian traffic monitoring, aircraft maintenance, filmmaking, and various other purposes. This is, in turn, driving the demand for SLAM technology, which is subsequently causing the boom of the global simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) technology market. As a result, the market attained a revenue of $152.2 million in 2019.
